Europa is an ongoing project to map european borders with sound.
I have made recordings of the wind blowing through fences, of distant sounds
blowing from outside and of the ambience of the places themselves.

versions of this project have been presented on radio, cd, the internet
and in exhibition spaces.

In the installation version, sounds from borders combine to form imaginary places:
deserted, empty landscapes where the wind carries the few traces of life from afar.
Each short piece is generated "in real time" by a computer program using drawings
of borders to determine timing and movement. The resulting soundscapes are often
similar, but never repeat.

As the state of Europe expands, the borders get longer and the fences get higher,
making the project of mapping an increasingly absurd undertaking.

Presentations to date:
"Something is Rotten in the State of Europe." Lokaal 01, Antwerpen, 2001.
CCNOA, Brussels 2002.
Stroom HCBK, Den Haag 2002.
versions have been made for online presentation for " PeepRadio" (Denmark)
and "Borderhack", Mexico.
