De Verborgen Stad (Secret City) was a project of
De Vleeshal in Middelburg. This project took place
around the centre of Middelburg in the alleys,
passageways and gardens behind the houses rather
than in the historic centre itself.
The Audio guide for The Secret City, to be received
via portable radio receivers, was a transmission of
observations, comments, directions, stories, memories
and displaced sounds. These mixed with the natural
soundscape of Middelburg; voices and water, birds and
animals, machines and muzak.
Each listener, by walking the route, created his or her
own version.
Drawings, notes and sound recordings made during
walks through the alleyways formed the basis for
this soundwork.
